Playing a titanic monster and grinding cities into rubble delivers an immediate, faintly guilty glee. Grapples, throws and collapsing buildings turn every clash into gleeful demolition. With two players the chaos spills off the screen into a gloriously embraced mess. Raw, dumb kaiju wrestling, but tremendously cathartic, yesterday as much as today.

A port of SNK's fighting game, King of the Monsters pits giant kaiju that destroy whole cities with grapples and devastating attacks. The concept of wrestling between titanic monsters, the destructible scenery and two player play give a spectacular, original blow off. The Mega Drive conversion simplifies the arcade and trims the roster, but keeps the spirit. For a fan of offbeat fighting or of kaiju, the title keeps a raw pleasure and a B movie charm, especially in twos.
