Collector interest

FromSoftware's very first game and a distant blueprint for Dark Souls, King's Field is a slow, atmospheric first-person dungeon crawler. This NTSC-U US edition corresponds to the Japanese King's Field II, the first entry released in the West, and its sealed copies reach extreme prices, marking the rarity of intact examples of an obscure launch title turned cult as FromSoftware rose. Loose copies, by contrast, stay far more affordable.

An underrated gem

The first stone in FromSoftware's edifice, this direct ancestor of the Souls plunges you into a first-person dungeon where every step can be fatal, with no map or guidance. Its slowness and harshness still put people off. But its crushing atmosphere and clever level design will fascinate the patient, curious to trace the genre back to its roots.

Is King's Field still worth playing in 2026?

A first person action RPG from FromSoftware, King's Field plunges the player into labyrinthine dungeons explored at a slow, oppressive pace, where every step can be fatal. The heavy atmosphere, the sense of solitude and the merciless difficulty foreshadow the DNA of the studio's future Souls games. The sluggish movement and the rudimentary period 3D call for real indulgence. A founding cornerstone of the first person dungeon crawler, to recommend for fans of anxious exploration and demanding challenge.
