Land of Illusion is perhaps the best Mickey Mouse game on Game Gear. Varied fantasy levels, fluid gameplay, impressive visuals. An absolutely essential portable platformer gem.

The sequel plays on changes of scale: a shrunken Mickey crosses grass as tall as trees, then regains his size in rooms with ordinary furniture, and the artwork has to make that shifting relation to the setting legible. The palettes follow the zones crossed, saturated greens for the meadows, cold blues for the ice caves, browns for the village.
The writing is broader than in the previous instalment: phrases stretch over more bars, shifts into the minor accompany the descent into underground zones, and the end-of-level themes close on a full cadence rather than a loop. The bass line carries most of the harmonic colour.
Mickey Mouse no Mahou no Crystal, a magical Mickey platformer by Sega exclusive to Japan, corresponding to the adventure known elsewhere under another name. This original Japanese edition carries the title and local presentation of an Illusion-series entry. Its desirability lies in its Japanese exclusivity, the coherence of a beloved Mickey platformer saga and the scarcity of Game Gear releases in Japan.

A direct sequel to Castle of Illusion on Game Gear, Land of Illusion offers a more open platforming adventure with a light Metroid like progression and abilities to unlock for Mickey. The charming pastel art direction stays faithful to the first game and the content richness impresses for the portable machine. Often considered one of the best Disney platformers on Game Gear, the title keeps an absolutely irresistible charm and largely deserves the detour for genre fans today still here truly indeed.
