The Castle of Illusion sequel is at least as good, and some prefer it. Mickey is more agile, levels are more inventive. An absolute must-have in the Master System library for platformer fans.

Collector interest

Direct sequel to Castle of Illusion on Master System, kept strictly PAL and Brazilian, which makes it the most ambitious and most polished piece of the 8 bit Sega Disney sub franchise, and technically the most advanced outside the Mega Drive. Continental run was short at the late 1993 launch, the European cardboard box is fragile, and frequent confusion with Castle in listings pushes precisely identified clean complete copies up on the collector market.

Better with friends

A charming platformer where a mascot explores a dreamlike world riddled with secrets and hidden passages. Without a simultaneous mode on the console, it's best enjoyed in company as a relay: you pass the pad at tricky spots, whisper the solutions and laugh at clumsy falls. Gentle and accessible to all ages, it makes shared sessions a convivial stroll where everyone wants to dig up the next treasure.

Is Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse still worth playing in 2026?

A sequel to Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion pushes further on every front. Mickey is more agile, the arsenal expands and the stages blend straightforward platforming with light exploration, with meaningful backtracking and items to gather. The art direction squeezes the best out of the console and the difficulty is better measured. Many regard it as the Disney peak on Master System, on equal footing with its predecessor. Even today the cart plays through with genuine pleasure, and it remains a fine gateway into 8-bit Sega platforming for Mega Drive natives.
