This third instalment arrives late in the console's life and shows it: larger sprites than in the earlier games, richer idle animations, settings where wood, stone and fabric textures can be told apart instead of plain flat areas. The levels play on the materials crossed rather than on the themed worlds of the previous instalments.
The writing benefits from a mastery accumulated over the machine's lifetime: the three voices are distributed more supply, the melody changing register within a single piece, which gives the themes a progression the earlier instalments lacked. The level endings take up the opening figure, closing each stage on a complete loop.
