This edition foregrounds the widening of its playable cast. To the previous game's warriors are added figures of unheard-of styles, the wizard Gandalf and his flashes of light, the hobbits Frodo and Sam betting on stealth, the archer Faramir. Each brings a distinct body language and powers, so that the roster now covers a far wider range, from the steel colossus to the small furtive being.
The score plays on two opposed scales. On one side, the martial fresco, massive brass and drums for the great pitched battles; on the other, an intimate, fragile theme, pared to a few notes, to accompany the exhausting march of the Ring-bearers toward the enemy's home. This marked contrast between the immense and the minute musically doubles the story's dual nature, at once epic and intimate.
The story splits into two journeys carried out at once. On one hand the great war of the free kingdoms, where captains gather their forces; on the other the stubborn crossing of Frodo and Sam toward Mount Doom, alone in the heart of enemy lands. The alternation between these two threads, one thunderous, one silent, recalls that the fate of a world rests on the humblest shoulders.
