NIS tactical RPG in the Netherworld universe, a sort of Disgaea spin-off. The combat system builds on Disgaea mechanics with an Overlord battle universe. Less deep than Disgaea but very pleasant for NIS fans seeking more content in this crazy universe.

Description
A Nippon Ichi tactical-RPG released in 2005 (US, Europe), subtitled "Chronicles of the Sacred Tome." King of the Netherworld Zetta, resurrected inside a sacred tome, must rebuild his kingdom tile by tile. Adds building construction to the Disgaea formula, with the same numerical excess and absurd humor.

Is Makai Kingdom - Chronicles of the Sacred Tome still worth playing in 2026?

A Nippon Ichi tactical RPG, Makai Kingdom blends the studio's offbeat turn based battles with a free unit deployment system from a Sacred Tome, without a fixed grid. The absurd humour, the excess of the damage and the depth of the customisation mechanics appeal to fans of the studio. The dense technicality and the very particular kitsch aesthetic call for commitment. A singular tactical to recommend for fans of Nippon Ichi strategy, offbeat humour and systems to exploit endlessly.
