Absolute masterpiece from Nippon Ichi Software. Dark absurd humour, bottomlessly deep tactical RPG mechanics and the infinite level-up system make Disgaea a unique experience. Laharl, Etna and Flonne are among the most memorable genre characters on PS2.

Description
Original Japanese edition of Nippon Ichi's Disgaea - Hour of Darkness released in 2003, distributed as "Makai Senki Disgaea." The very first entry in the franchise, which laid the foundations of the Nippon Ichi formula: a tactical-RPG with insane stats, demon prince Laharl, the Netherworld setting and unflappable humor.

Story

A demon prince roused to reclaim his throne, Laharl crosses a Netherworld as unhinged as it is endearing. Beneath the absurd humour and tasty one-liners hides a genuine point about love, justice and redemption. This clever writing, able to make you laugh and then move you, founded the identity of a cult saga.

Collector interest

A limited Japanese Genteiban edition of Disgaea, packed with collectible items around Nippon Ichi's cult tactical RPG. Markedly rarer than the standard run, it appeals to demanding fans of the series, its value measured by the complete set. Its desirability rests on this top-tier scarcity and the limited edition's specific content.

Is Makai Senki Disgaea still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2003 on PS2 and known in the West as Disgaea - Hour of Darkness, Nippon Ichi's project is one of the deepest and most excessive tactical RPGs ever conceived. The grid system, the lift and throw mechanics, the Dark Assembly and above all the ability to climb to level 9999 in endless Item Worlds offer near bottomless depth. The writing, parodic and endearing, carries prince Laharl with offbeat humour. The sprite aesthetic has charm and the replay value is colossal. Essential for devotees of turn based strategy and of limitless progression who treat number growth as a game in itself.
