The giant clashes require turning the console. The picture then switches to a vertical format, an opponent several screens tall fills the whole frame, and the enlarged hero has to be read full length against a colossus never seen in its entirety. That change of orientation, rare and reserved for a few fights, produces a sense of scale no horizontal framing could have given.
The soundtrack is written like a combat metronome. Every enemy attack is preceded by an identifiable rhythmic figure, a roll, a silence, an off-beat accent, and listening alone is enough to know when to press. The pieces are therefore composed with very clear bars and few ornaments, which makes them instantly memorable and turns timing into a matter of ear as much as reflex.

Diving into Luigi's dreams to wage giant battles and solve brand-new puzzles, all while syncing jumps to precise timing, makes for an action RPG whose every clever idea rekindles curiosity. Its collector value grew after the AlphaDream dissolution, which turned each original pressing of their titles into a documentary piece in its own right.
