"Captivating"
Infested stations, organic creatures and unsettling lighting weave a constant visual tension. The contrast between cold corridors and biological growths feeds a hushed atmosphere of dread. This art direction, dense and oppressive, masterfully serves an adventure under pressure.
More tense than ever, Fusion's music trades melody for an atmosphere of pure dread, underlining the SA-X hunt. Chilling pads, muffled pulses and heavy silences weave an oppressive science-fiction climate. This controlled sonic atmosphere makes fear the true heart of the experience.
Gameplay
"Masterful"
Navigating a station haunted by the SA-X sets up constant tension, between methodical exploration and breathless escapes. More guided than its elders, the route gains dramatic intensity without sacrificing the precision of jumps and shots. That oppressive mood and controlled pacing make it an adventure still captivating today.
European PAL edition of Metroid Fusion, the first direct sequel to Super Metroid and the only 2D Metroid built around a linear COM driven narrative structure that breaks with the saga's free exploration grammar. That formal singularity and the definitive closure of the 8 to 16 bit 2D Samus arc make it a particularly loaded piece for Metroid enthusiasts. Nintendo Europe run was decent, the European cardboard box is fragile, and a PAL identified clean complete copy is clearly valued.
Memorable bosses
More guided yet oppressive, this entry lets the threat of the SA-X loom, an icy double of Samus that hunts her with no way to face it head-on. The bosses, writhing mutations of the X parasite like the frightening, gravity-warping Nightmare, bet on unease and reading weaknesses. Constant tension and an organic bestiary mark one of the most harrowing Metroids.
A cult cover
Bathed in icy blue, Samus's new Fusion Suit stands out against the oppressive corridors of the BSL station. The cold palette and tight framing instill a creeping horror tension, true to the standoff with the SA-X. Far from the usual orange glow, this singular colour identity leaves a lasting mark.
Is Metroid Fusion still worth playing in 2026?
Metroid Fusion injects a dose of survival horror into the classic formula by pitting Samus against the X parasite on an infested space station. The structure is more linear than usual, dictated by the computer's orders, which divides opinions yet serves real narrative tension. The SA X stalks the bounty hunter with a cinematic presence rare for 2D, and the level design remains exemplary in its readability. For 2D Metroid fans or anyone after an atmospheric take on the genre, this is a GBA peak not to miss.
