Story
★★★★★
"Classic"
The interface is drawn like the notebook of a naturalist on expedition. Anatomy plates marking the fragile parts, engraved pictograms for statuses and resistances, zone maps traced by hand with notes in the margin: everything is presented as records accumulated in the field. That documentary approach gives unusual weight to information that elsewhere would be nothing but numbers.
The higher tiers rewrite themes already known. A piece heard dozens of hours earlier comes back with an enlarged brass section, doubled percussion and a slightly slower tempo, and that heaviness alone announces that you face a more dangerous version of a familiar opponent. Recognising the arrangement before recognising the beast becomes a hunter's reflex.
Gameplay
"Masterful"
Stalking the beast, reading its attacks and choosing the right moment to strike makes for combat of a density few action-RPGs reach. The added verticality and leaps energise the hunt and open up new approaches. The demands put off at first, but gradually mastering each weapon offers a deep satisfaction that justifies hundreds of hours.
Fun
"Pleasant"
Addictiveness
"Obsessive"
Bulking out the hunt with new monsters and a fearsome top-tier difficulty pushes the track-carve-forge loop to its peak, where every completed set unlocks a more merciless target. Multiplayer multiplies the urge to head back out. The farming stays demanding, but the depth of the system and the thrill of cooperative hunting pull you in for hundreds of hours.
Difficulty
"Difficult"
Lifespan
"Massive"
Featuring the formidable G-Rank, this expanded entry pushes the limits of an already inexhaustible hunt. Facing brand-new monsters, forging the ultimate gear and cooperating at high level fills countless hours. That surplus of content, tailored for seasoned hunters, makes it one of the most generous and durable cuts.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate PAL is the second of only two mainline series boxed appearances on 3DS in Europe, and the first to include Circle Pad Pro support. Collector value rises as the franchise refocuses on Switch digital releases, turning PAL Monster Hunter cartridges into hunting objects for anyone preserving the series in physical form.
Memorable bosses
A teeming expansion of its elder, this vintage thickens the bestiary and toughens the hunts with ferocious predators like the slicing Seregios and overpowered monsters. Mounting colossi, exploiting ledges and dismantling each part become vital against raised difficulty tiers. The wealth of content and the depth of the fights make it a peak of portable hunting.
Better with friends
The definitive version of the acrobatic four-player hunt, swollen with monsters, weapons and quests to take down as a team over dozens of hours. Cooperation peaks here: everyone specializes, shares gear and refines tactics amid a shared rise in power. The sheer volume of content can intimidate, but that very depth is what bonds groups for memorable marathons.
Is Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate still worth playing in 2026?
Released in 2014 in Japan then 2015 in the West on 3DS and known in Japan as Monster Hunter 4G, Capcom's project is the enhanced version of Monster Hunter 4, and serves as the great Western entry point of the hunting series. Verticality, jumps and mounting energise a hunt built on observation, preparation and the mastery of varied weapons. The colossal content, the online multiplayer and the addition of monsters and quests make it the most complete version. The austere interface and the steep difficulty put off. An excellent hunting game, recommended for fans of technical combat and of cooperation.
