Love-de-Lic frames its world like a scale model: pre-rendered sets in soft volumes, characters shaped like figurines and fixed camera angles that turn every village into a diorama placed on a table. Kazuyuki Kurashima's character design gives the inhabitants a tender strangeness, and the light genuinely shifts when night falls over the island.
A child is pulled into the role playing game he was playing and discovers the other side of the set: the Hero slaughters harmless creatures and loots houses while nobody objects. His own task is to gather the souls of the victims and help the islanders instead. Moon turns the grammar of the genre upside down with disarming gentleness.
