A more level-headed 3D Mystical Ninja follow-up, less wild than the first outing. Four playable characters, a semi-open world and cleaner combat make for a more accessible adventure. It lacks the musical madness of the original, but the writing stays tasty and the Edo world feels firmly planted.

Konami European July 1999 pressing of the Western sequel to Mystical Ninja on N64, never released in the United States. This regional singularity makes it one of the rarest Konami N64 cartridges in the world and the only official English version of the second Goemon on N64. The European secondary market sustains a durably high rating, especially for complete copies with the Goemon poster distributed by Konami Europe at release.

An underrated gem

Released in Europe and Japan, this second 3D Goemon pushes the gang's zany adventure further as they set out to save their friends turned into ghosts. Richer and more polished than the first, it nonetheless suffered from a limited release. Its offbeat humour and whimsical feudal Japan will delight fans of colourful platforming and exoticism.

Is Mystical Ninja 2 Starring Goemon still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 1998 on Nintendo 64 and kept rare outside Japan, Konami's project extends the zany adventures of Goemon, a hero of Japanese folklore revisited with absurd humour. The game alternates three dimensional platforming and action, exploration of colourful villages and spectacular giant robot battles, in a resolutely wacky atmosphere. The flamboyant art direction, the catchy soundtrack and the eccentric writing forge a singular and endearing identity. The camera and a few controls show their age. A cult and little known gem, recommended for fans of Japanese action adventure and of offbeat worlds.
