This volume gathers the NESTS trilogy, the arc that reinvents King of Fighters at the turn of the 2000s. Gone is the warmth of the early days, in comes a colder, more futuristic look, carried by a new hero, K', a distant, dark-glasses mercenary, and a plot of clones and conspiracy. The Striker system swells the teams with a callable backup, crowding the screen with assistants who pop in for a single blow.
The aesthetic shift is answered by a sonic one. Where the first King of Fighters ran on funk and warm rock, the NESTS saga leans toward the electronic, cold synth pads, drier beats and techno-tinged sounds that match its world of labs and clones. The soundtrack turns more urban and flashy, marking the change of generation by ear as much as the image does.

Collector interest
The seventh volume of the NeoGeo Online Collection, gathering King of Fighters' Nests arc and its narrative cycle around an organization, in a set meant for the faithful. Kept Japan-only and without a Western release, its interest lies in this thematic grouping of entries rather than a tiny run. A piece valued by fans of SNK versus.
Better with friends
A re-release of a standout chapter of team fighting, whose striker system lets you call in a partner for backup at the key moment. The competition plays out as much in team-building as in timing, opening devious strategies between players. Rich and demanding, it rewards regular duos with matches of delicious tension where every ally call can turn the tide of the fight.
Is NeoGeo Online Collection Vol. 7 - The King of Fighters - Nests still worth playing in 2026?
Released in 2006 on PS2, this volume of SNK Playmore's NeoGeo Online collection gathers the entries of The King of Fighters forming the NESTS narrative arc, namely the 99, 2000 and 2001 chapters. Watching the series modernise, from the Striker system to the successive gameplay adjustments, offers an instructive panorama of a pivotal period. The Neo Geo sprites keep all their character and the team based fighter system stays demanding and deep. The presentation stays plain and the absence of working online play limits the reach. Recommended for SNK fighting game devotees and for lovers of two dimensional versus fighting.
