Collector interest

Night Trap, Sega's cult FMV where the player watches a mansion through cameras to trap intruders, a title at the heart of the 1993 US Senate hearings on video-game violence. Its collector interest is driven by that historic notoriety and by the multiplicity of its runs, revisions and hybrid versions that collectors document. The US edition, the most widespread, acts as the standard entry.

A questionable morality

The whole game comes down to relentlessly spying on the cameras of a house full of young female guests, finger poised to spring traps on the prowling intruders. Pitched as a protection mission, the setup nonetheless keeps a faintly voyeuristic surveillance air, where you scan bedrooms and corridors with a diligence that the noble intention doesn't quite excuse.
