Okage is a wonderfully weird gem. The hero's shadow gets hijacked by a pompous demon king, and what follows is a quirky RPG packed with dry humor and oddball charm that simply lingers.

Description
A Japanese RPG by Zener Works and Sony released in 2001 (Japan) then 2002 (US), distributed as "Okage Shadow King." Ari, a shy young boy, becomes possessed by the demon Stan who dreams of returning to his throne as Evil King. Turn based combat, an expressionist cel shaded aesthetic in the Tim Burton vein and caustic humor that defuses the genre's clichés.

Story
"Captivating"
A gothic cartoon universe of stretched shadows, muted colours and elongated silhouettes: the game cultivates an offbeat, charming strangeness. The singular character design composes a world halfway between fairy tale and childish nightmare. This visual direction, atypical and polished, stands as an unforgettable curiosity.

Is Okage - Shadow King still worth playing in 2026?

An offbeat RPG from Zener Works published by Sony, Okage Shadow King follows a teenager whose shadow is possessed by a dark king as megalomaniac as he is comic, in a world of singular gothic, twisted art direction. The dark humour, the parodic tone and the unique visual style stand apart from classic JRPGs. The turn based combat system stays conventional and the pace uneven. An atypical, charming RPG to recommend for fans of black humour, bold art direction and Japanese curiosities.
