Namco transposes Greek mythology into a vertical shooter: the hero rides a winged horse above temples, rough seas and fields of ruins. The opponents are so many ancient creatures, gorgons, minotaurs and titans, drawn with a statuary concern that sets them clearly apart from the genre's usual ships.
The score adopts a peplum tone: solemn brass, marked timpani, modal melodies that evoke antiquity without falling into reconstruction. The themes slow as the deities approach and set off again in fanfare once the obstacle is passed, structuring the journey as a series of successive cantos.
Phelios PAL is the European edition of the Namco shooter, distributed by Namco/Sega on Megadrive.
