"Anecdotal"
A launch title, it works first as a demonstration: a Mode 7 ground that tilts and turns beneath the aircraft, a clear sky, a few landmarks and nothing superfluous. That bareness is a choice rather than a limit, and the instructor portraits, drawn with deadpan humour, are enough to give the game a personality.
Soyo Oka writes fair weather music: light electric piano themes, soft brass, bossa rhythms that give flight the air of a Sunday afternoon. The parachute and hang glider events get their own variations, and the little success motif on landing remains one of the most satisfying jingles in the catalogue.

Learning to fly by parachute, hang-glider or jetpack across a peaceful sky: this light simulator delivers a sense of freedom both soothing and exhilarating. Nailing a perfect landing, hitting the targets and chaining manoeuvres rewards precision without ever rushing you. A technical showcase for the console, it distils a soft, elegant and surprisingly gripping aerial pleasure.
The Japanese Super Famicom edition of the 1992 Nintendo R&D1 title, the original incarnation of this Mode 7 showcase with rotation and zoom. The SFC pressing in its cardboard box with spine card is the most widespread and affordable, the Japanese market having broadly circulated this technical demonstrator. Appeal rests on source authenticity and the Japanese cover, prized by Nintendo enthusiasts chasing revision and original box rather than on scarcity.
Is Pilotwings still worth playing in 2026?
Pilotwings is one of the great Mode 7 showcases on the SFC, namely a flight school that alternates precision parachute jumps, biplane, jet pack and helicopter. The background warps in real time to suggest depth, and each license demands a specific learning of feel. Short but memorable, the title keeps a technical singularity still felt today. Recommended to those curious about pre DS Nintendo, light arcade simulation fans and lovers of iconic Mode 7 era productions.
