Pirates of Dark Water, The (Mega Drive) price, value & rarity
The PAL version of a Sunsoft beat'em up drawn from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, with limited European distribution and a brief shelf life. The high CIB value stems from the scarcity of complete European boxed copies, the title having vanished quickly from shelves in 1994. A licence now forgotten outside the United States, which makes the European variant all the harder to assemble intact for fans of Mega Drive cartoon tie-ins.
Is Pirates of Dark Water, The still worth playing in 2026?
An adaptation of the animated series by Sega, The Pirates of Dark Water blends action and beat them up in the Dark Water archipelago, where Ioz and his allies fight the minions of a maritime fantasy world. The polished sprites and the mood faithful to the cartoon appeal, but the repetitive gameplay and uneven difficulty temper the enthusiasm. The licence's charm stays its best asset. For a fan of retro beat them ups or of the cult series, the title keeps an interest above all nostalgic and an honest production.
