The North American variant of the Sunsoft beat'em up based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, more widely distributed than its PAL cousin and thus easier to find loose. The fragile US cardboard box nonetheless explains why clean complete copies grow scarce as the sleeve wears. The market rests on fans of B-tier Genesis beat'em ups and on nostalgia for the TV franchise, which stayed largely American with no real international aura.

Is Pirates of Dark Water, The still worth playing in 2026?

An adaptation of the animated series by Sega, The Pirates of Dark Water blends action and beat them up in the Dark Water archipelago, where Ioz and his allies fight the minions of a maritime fantasy world. The polished sprites and the mood faithful to the cartoon appeal, but the repetitive gameplay and uneven difficulty temper the enthusiasm. The licence's charm stays its best asset. For a fan of retro beat them ups or of the cult series, the title keeps an interest above all nostalgic and an honest production.
