Collector interest

German adaptation of Yellow, set apart by its German cover and a booklet that adopts the local naming already settled by Rote and Blaue. Released in April 2000 once the European market had absorbed the first two versions, which translates into a shorter German run and rarer cardboard boxes in clean shape. First German translated Pokemon title to make direct use of the Game Boy Color palette. Demand is clearly domestic.

A cult cover

Pikachu takes the spotlight alone, red cheeks and a mischievous grin, against a vivid yellow that grabs the eye at once. Conceived in the wake of the anime, this Japanese edition plays on the mascot's warmth and instant recognizability. Sunny and endearing, it fixed the face of an entire saga for good.

A questionable morality

Same collecting quest, with one delicious twist: the electric mascot politely declines its Poké Ball and trots along behind you, a living reminder that all the others do end up tidily stored in theirs. You roam the world catching everything that moves to become the best, without dwelling too long on the fate of those who weren't lucky enough to be the star.

Is Pokemon - Gelbe Edition - Special Pikachu Edition still worth playing in 2026?

A Pikachu special edition inspired by the cartoon, Pokemon Yellow polishes the first generation with real personality. Pikachu follows the trainer outside its Poke Ball, expresses moods and reactions, and the fixed starters bring the experience closer to the show. Game Boy Color compatibility provides clean colourisation that keeps the cart pleasant to revisit. In terms of balance and writing, this is the most refined version of generation one. For anyone looking to discover or rediscover Kanto today, it is the edition to favour, more generous and warmer than its siblings.
