Konami pushes the shooter towards a cartoon for small children: bell shaped ships with big eyes, cotton clouds, vegetable enemies and bosses that pout. The bells change colour as you shoot them, turning the screen into a bright carillon, and the pilot portraits borrow directly from the anime line of the period.
The score takes on the same innocence as the image: singing melodies, light synthetic brass, bells and xylophones up front, a brisk tempo that never turns aggressive. Each zone gets a short refrain you remember after a single pass, and the boss fights rise a tone while staying on the side of the nursery rhyme.
The original Japanese version of Pop'n TwinBee on Super Famicom, Konami's 1993 cute'em up with chibi characters. A source pressing with SFC cardboard box and spine card, the most widespread and accessible of the title. The appeal lies in the entry's place in the largely Japanese TwinBee series and in the two-player co-op that makes it a choice piece for collectors of cutely styled Konami shmups.

Pop'n TwinBee is a cute Konami vertical shoot up in the TwinBee arcade lineage, namely fruit power ups that change weapon color and a decidedly cartoon spirit. The local co op works very well and the controls stay precise despite dense projectile patterns. The cartridge keeps a striking freshness, both family friendly and demanding. Recommended to fans of readable vertical shmups, of Konami's colorful side and to duos wanting a shareable shmup with no steep learning curve.
