Netherworld Prinnys head out on an absurd mission to recover Etna's stolen lingerie in this even harder second entry. Published by Nippon Ichi Software, released in Japan in April 2010. Hardcore difficulty, new stages and bosses, bonus equipment, unhinged Disgaea series humour. Japan exclusive.
The settings inventory platform-game clichés and send them up: ice floe, pastry world, haunted castle and steam factory follow on, each painted across three or four planes scrolling at different speeds. The background always stays softer than the foreground, which keeps the traps perfectly legible.
The penguins' voices become an instrument in their own right: short cries, exclamations and onomatopoeia land on the strong beats and punctuate the instrumental loops. The boss themes invert the logic by slowing down abruptly, letting a pompous organ mock the seriousness a confrontation ought to impose.
