Puzzle Bobble sequel with extra levels and enriched content. Bubble-shooting mechanic is still just as satisfying. Slightly superior to the first in terms of variety. An essential puzzle game on Saturn.

"Anecdotal"
The enriched Japanese edition adds its own decorative layer: animated vignettes slipped between levels, opponents given more detailed expressions, special effects on certain bubbles that fizz or change appearance. The board keeps its impeccable readability, but the margin around it turns into a small spectacle in its own right.
The series' main theme returns in several arrangements, which clearly sets this version apart: orchestrated variations, accelerated takes, rereadings with different timbres depending on the mode chosen. That abundance turns a soundtrack known for its simplicity into a small catalogue of variations, without ever betraying the spirit of the original melody.
Gameplay

Fun
"From the very first seconds"
Aim, group three bubbles and set off cascading drops: this edition refines the cult formula with new modes and careful balancing for versus. The threat of the descending ceiling forces quick decisions, and the two-player duel cranks up the pressure. Colourful, clear and addictive, a puzzle perfect for face-offs as tense as they are friendly.
Addictiveness
"Obsessive"
Firing bubbles at a descending ceiling, anticipating the bounces and triggering long cascades sets up a tense puzzle that pushes you to the next board. The new modes and the versus revive the escalating challenge solo as well as in pairs. The family resemblance to the series is marked, but the precision demanded keeps an immediate and tenacious pull.
Complete: box, manual and disc/cart very clean. Lightly handled.

Is Puzzle Bobble 2X still worth playing in 2026?
An expanded version of Puzzle Bobble 2, Puzzle Bobble 2X adds extra levels, new modes and tweaks to the cult formula of shooting colored bubbles to cluster and pop them. The crisp, fearsome mechanic, the addictive versus mode and the generous content make it one of the series' best variations, especially tasty in two-player. The formula stays familiar. A safe bet of retro arcade puzzling, worth recommending to fans of brain-teasers and snappy duels.
