Quake II on PS1 is a decent port of id Software's legendary FPS. Console-adapted graphics, fast-paced combat gameplay against the Strogg preserved. Less precise than PC but the frenzied action of the FPS masterpiece remains intact. A good port for FPS fans on Sony's console.

Collector interest

A console port of id Software's brisk shooter, a technical feat in running a demanding PC FPS on the PlayStation with rethought comfort. Still fairly common in the West, its interest lies in this porting curiosity rather than scarcity. A piece of history for anyone wanting to see how a pillar of PC shooting was adapted to the gamepad.

Is Quake II still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 1999 on PS1, Hammerhead's port of id Software's entry succeeds in transposing the Quake II feel onto Sony's console, with coloured lighting and a quick pace. The nervous arenas, the heavy weapons and the industrial Sonic Mayhem music still land. A few technical limits show on resolution and framerate, and the pad handling requires adjustment. Recommended today for fans of classic first person shooters, for id Software devotees curious about an honest console transposition and for PS1 collectors fond of brave technical conversions made on Sony's first home console hardware.
