The Japanese version of Racing Lagoon, Square's bold crossover of night racing and RPG, with stylized storytelling and an open world of lit streets. Never localized, this singular title became a cult favorite among fans of offbeat Square and of narrative tuning games. Desirability blends its reputation as an inspiring oddity with the scarcity of a work that stayed Japan-only.

An underrated gem

A true oddity from Square, this "racing RPG" grafts experience points, gear and a surprisingly poetic narrative onto nocturnal urban street races. Its uneven tech and Japan-only release left it in the shadows. Its unexpected lyrical tone and genre-blending make it a fascinating curiosity for racing fans who crave something off the beaten path.

Is Racing Lagoon still worth playing in 2026?

A singular Square hybrid, Racing Lagoon blends car racing and RPG in a nocturnal Yokohama, with a progression system, parts to acquire and a poetic narrative dubbed a high speed driving RPG. The melancholic urban mood, the visual style and the lyrical writing make it a work apart, a world away from the classic racing game. The stiff driving and the Japan exclusivity deter. A fascinating curiosity for fans of bold propositions and of unexpected genre crossovers.
