The roads cross typed American landscapes, north-western forests, deserts, coastlines, with a horizon that warps in the bends and civilian traffic coming head on. The riders lean, take hits and tumble in a roll, and the chain or club blows are animated readably enough to stay spectacular.
Pushing the rock further, the sequel makes the FM chip crackle with supercharged riffs cut for speed and brawling. The nervy themes match the adrenaline of the illegal races and keep up a constant tension. This electric energy, faithful to the series' spirit, remains a shot of pure motorised rage.
Often cited as the series' peak on the console, Road Rash II refines the race and brawl formula with a two player split screen mode, a nitro system and clashes as gleeful as ever with chains. The sense of speed, the clarity of the long roads and the unashamed violence make up a fearsomely effective cocktail. The addition of two player play multiplies the pleasure and replayability. The presentation has aged without denting the fun. For a fan of arcade racing or someone nostalgic for controller in hand evenings, the title keeps an intact energy and pleasure.
