The granddaddy of the hereditary roguelite still holds up: each heir inherits traits sometimes cruel, sometimes funny. Permanent upgrades to the castle soften failure. A snappy classic whose loop still hooks today.

Memorable bosses

Battling your ancestors takes on a peculiar flavor when each generation inherits quirks and flaws that reshuffle the deck. The dungeon guardians mutate with every visit, demanding reading and adaptation over memorization. Death is never an end but a springboard, and a victory wrenched after ten attempts tastes all the sweeter.

Is Rogue Legacy still worth playing in 2026?

Rogue Legacy laid a foundational brick of the genre, the idea of passing progress from heir to heir despite death. On Switch you feel both its influence and its age. Its random genetic traits, from colorblindness to gigantism, keep an intact charm and humor. But its combat and jumps lack the precision we now expect, and the sequel has since refined the formula. It remains a historically important title, pleasant in short sessions. Best recommended to the genre-curious and the nostalgic.
