A little-known but pleasant Taito beat'em up with Japanese arcade flair. Technically dated, fun in two-player, lovely for hidden gem fans.

Collector interest

A Wolf Team shoot'em up published by Sega in Japan and Korea under the title Runark, known in the West as Gaiares. Renowned for its enemy-weapon absorption system and ambitious technique, it holds a solid value among genre fans. Its desirability rests on that Asian pressing with an alternate title, rarer than the American edition, sought by collectors of shoot'em ups and of Wolf Team's Mega Drive output.

Is Runark still worth playing in 2026?

A scrolling beat them up from Taito, known in the West as Growl, Runark sends agents to fight poachers and traffickers to save endangered animals, with fists, whip and picked up weapons. The generous action, the many enemies on screen and the co-op bring an effective arcade catharsis, carried by expressive sprites. The repetitiveness and a high difficulty temper the whole. For a fan of retro beat them ups or someone curious about Taito's arcade catalogue, the title keeps a direct fun and an unusual cause.
