Samurai Warriors 2 leaves Three Kingdoms China for the Japan of warring provinces. White-gabled castles, cherry trees in bloom, lacquered armor and horned helmets of the warrior caste replace the Chinese palaces. The historical Sengoku generals, from Oda to Takeda, sport embroidered crests and back-banners that plant the Japanese setting beyond doubt.

Mowing down whole armies at the head of feudal-Japan heroes opens a musou loop where each officer has their own mode and weapons to unlock. Replaying the battles under every banner and collecting it all stretches the content across countless hours. That generosity, paired with cathartic combat, founds a longevity dear to fans of the genre.

A sequel to Koei's feudal musou, Samurai Warriors 2, known in Japan as Sengoku Musou 2, thickens the formula with a wider roster of Sengoku lords, spectacular moves and better designed battlefields. The one against a thousand catharsis, the per-character story mode and the strategic component gain clarity and generosity. The repetition stays the genre's inherent pitfall. A good musou for fans of massive heroic action and of Japanese civil war history.
