Its value rests on its status as a founding episode and its Japanese fantasy mood. The North American pressing is rarer than the common Japanese editions for lack of a broad Western Neo Geo CD market, and the disc opened affordable access to an early-machine title.

Sengoku Denshou, alias Sengoku, is an SNK beat 'em up in which warriors cross eras to fight demons, with a transformation system summoning warrior spirits. The time travel, the metamorphoses and the two-player co-op mode bring a certain originality to the genre, in a mystical mood. The fearsome difficulty, repetition and a launch-game presentation temper the enthusiasm. For fans of retro beat 'em ups and early SNK curiosities, it is a demanding diversion with a particular identity.
