Released in 2005, this Sega spin off puts Shadow centre stage, darker and armed, in a deliberate attempt to harden the Sonic series tone. The branching morality system, with firearms and vehicles, offers several endings and real forks. The speed is still there, yet the imprecise handling and wayward camera often break the rhythm. The edgy art direction has aged poorly, but the curious about the Sonic universe and fans of atypical spin offs find a singular experience worth rediscovering today.
