Shining Force Neo reroutes the saga toward hack-and-slash. Snappy combat, generous dungeons, but the Shining identity feels diluted. Pleasant for fans of mindless catharsis.

Description
A Neverland and Sega action RPG released in 2005, the first entry of the Shining franchise's new Action RPG direction (breaking away from the 90s Tactics RPG entries). Max fights in a medieval-fantasy world with isometric hack-and-slash and controllable familiars. A release that divided fans nostalgic for the original formula, but well-received as an action game.

Is Shining Force Neo still worth playing in 2026?

An action RPG from Neverland and Sega, Shining Force Neo reorients the famous tactical series towards top down hack and slash, where a hero and his companions cut through hordes of monsters with sword and magic. The snappy combat system, the abundant loot and the Diablo style progression offer a rewarding vent. The repetition of the dungeons and a classic story temper the whole. A good game for fans of loot action RPGs, snappy combat and fantasy on PS2, provided you accept the series' change of direction.
