Sega first-person dungeon RPG, among the genre's best on Saturn. Pleasant labyrinthine exploration, well-paced combat, likeable characters. Visually polished. A quiet classic that fully deserves its reputation.

American NTSC-U edition of Shining the Holy Ark on Saturn, released by Sega of America in 1997, a first person Camelot dungeon RPG with Megami Tensei style allied monsters. Localized Saturn RPGs were printed in low volume in the United States on a machine already losing momentum, which makes the NTSC-U version markedly rarer than the Japanese one. Its transitional place between Shining Force and Shining Force III makes it a sought target for US Saturn collectors and series fans, in clean complete condition.

Is Shining the Holy Ark still worth playing in 2026?

An RPG by Camelot Software exclusive to Japan and the west on Saturn, Shining the Holy Ark offers a first person dungeon crawler with Companions system assisting in combat. The polished fantasy art direction, mysterious atmosphere and tactical combat system make it an absolutely overlooked gem of the Saturn catalogue. For anyone fond of dungeon crawlers or the Shining saga, a warm recommendation still valid today without any hesitation on the Sega machine for genre fans truly here indeed.
