Mystery Dungeon in its purest form, it traps the wanderer in dungeons rebuilt on every attempt, where death sends you back to the start, stripped of your gear. Thinking ahead turn by turn, managing hunger and improvising against the unexpected beat brute force. Merciless yet crystal-clear in its logic, this roguelike rewards patience and cunning, never luck alone.
Lifespan
"Massive"
Diving again and again into randomly generated dungeons turns every run into a fresh challenge, since permadeath strips your experience and sends you back to square one. Identifying items, fusing weapons and outwitting cunning enemies takes patience and mastery built up over the long term. This roguelike demand, where you replay endlessly to truly progress, is the root of its reputation as a fiercely time-consuming RPG.

Is Shiren the Wanderer still worth playing in 2026?

A roguelike from Chunsoft, Shiren the Wanderer sends the eponymous wanderer into randomly generated dungeons where each death sends you back to the start, stripped of your gear, in the purest tradition of the Japanese mystery dungeon genre. The depth of the mechanics, the strategic demand and the tension of a progression where everything can tip over appeal to roguelike fans. The merciless difficulty and the loss of progression may frustrate the uninitiated. For a fan of demanding roguelikes or a strategist who likes risk, the title keeps a perfectly preserved depth and tension.
