The Italian edition takes particular care with its monstrous creatures. The colossal spider with hairy legs and multiple eyes, the gaunt winged beast the Witch-king rides, the cave trolls clad in leather and iron are modeled to inspire dread. These giant adversaries, detailed far beyond ordinary soldiers, offer the most striking visual set pieces of the adventure.
The music reaches its peak of dread in the spider's lair. There, the score abandons all melody for a fabric of creeping sounds, high scrapings, breaths and clickings that mimic the invisible presence of the monster in the dark. This near-atonal stretch, against the grain of the heroic fanfares, turns an underground corridor into a sonic trap where the ear watches for the threat as much as the eye.
Rare for an action game, the story does not stop at victory. Once the enemy is defeated, the adventure still makes room for the time of return, of reunions and farewells, that gentle melancholy that follows great upheavals. By extending the story to the departures for the Grey Havens, the entry embraces the bittersweet note that closes Tolkien's work.
