Nintendo vertical shooter, one of the earliest on Game Boy. Spaceship against the Granada empire, six levels, simple power-ups. Minimalist but clean mechanics, punchy OST for 1990. Shorter and simpler than Gradius or R-Type GB, ideal for starting on vertical shoot. Solid for its age.

Is SolarStriker still worth playing in 2026?

Nintendo's in house vertical shooter, SolarStriker offers six clean space shooting levels against the Granada empire, in a deliberately simple, accessible approach. The speed and fire power ups and the steady difficulty rise deliver an immediate, readable pleasure with no fluff. The title lacks variety and depth against the great shmups, but its direct effectiveness and catchy soundtrack stay enjoyable in short sessions. For someone curious about the Game Boy's early days or a fan of minimalist shooting, the title keeps an honest charm.
