Sonic in isometric 3D, a mixed experience. Collecting Flickies slows down the franchise's characteristic action. Visually decent but doesn't capture Sonic's essence. More interesting as a curiosity than an authentic Sonic experience.

The Japanese release of Sonic 3D, out in mid-December 1997 onto a fading Saturn base even at home, where Sega had largely stopped large pressings. The content mirrors the Western editions, but the Japanese sleeve and spine card set this copy apart, harder to find complete with obi than expected. A sought import curiosity for its local packaging rather than gameplay already known elsewhere.

Is Sonic 3D - Flickies' Island still worth playing in 2026?

An isometric platformer from Sega, Sonic 3D Flickies' Island has Sonic save the Flickies trapped inside robots, guiding them toward teleporter rings across colorful levels. The isometric approach, unusual for the series, gives a more measured, exploratory Sonic, of definite charm despite a perspective that sometimes complicates precision. The pace is less thrilling than the classic 2D entries. A curiosity for Sonic fans curious about an offbeat formula and lovers of retro collect-a-thon platforming.
