"Anecdotal"
Still rousing, the music of this handheld sequel strings together colourful pop melodies and nervy rhythms of a fine vivacity. Each zone has its catchy theme, perfectly locked to the hedgehog's run. This 8-bit freshness, faithful to the series' energy, keeps an infectious, intact charm.

"From the very first seconds"
The hedgehog returns flanked by Tails in a brisker portable adventure, where minecart climbs and aerial stretches spice up the dash. Speed stays king, but the level design also asks for a touch of skill. Colourful and snappy, this second entry refines the formula and offers a fitting challenge, perfect for sessions on the fly.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2, the hedgehog's second portable adventure on Game Gear, in which he reunites with Tails and explores new zones against Dr Robotnik, released in a World pressing. A direct sequel to a founding console title, it benefits from a large run and stays common. Its collecting interest stays moderate but benefits from Sonic's timeless aura and his place in players' memory.
A cult cover
Sonic races down a dizzying loop, Tails in his wake, over a burst of color that pops even on a small screen. The dynamic diagonal and the depth of the scenery convey the acceleration and adventurous spirit of this sequel. Joyful and brisk, it makes you want to restart the run at once.
Is Sonic The Hedgehog 2 still worth playing in 2026?
The second portable Sonic, this entry sends the hedgehog to save Tails across new colourful zones by stopping Robotnik's plans. The pace stays snappy and the series' spirit present, but the sometimes unfair level design, certain blind jumps and a high difficulty cap the fun next to later entries. The visual charm and the catchy music remain. For a fan of retro platforming or a Sonic fan curious about the portable beginnings, the title keeps a definite interest, with sometimes fickle playability.
