Spyro 2 is the direct and more generous sequel to the first Spyro, with more worlds, varied quests and a lively central hub. NPC interactions are enriching and playtime is extended. Still as visually magnificent and fun. An excellent entry consolidating the franchise on PS1.

Collector interest

The second entry of the dragon mascot, fleshing out worlds and powers while refining the first's platforming joy, under distinct titles depending on region. Still fairly widespread in the West, its interest lies in this rise in quality of a well-liked line rather than scarcity. A prime piece for anyone wanting to track the dragon's evolution on the console.

A cult cover

Wings spread above motley worlds, the purple dragon charges toward adventure while the sorcerer Ripto scowls in a corner: the cover sets up the duel and the game's momentum from the start. Saturated colors and upward motion convey the freedom of flight and the humor of the clashes. Lively and playful, it sells a sequel broader and zanier.

Is Spyro 2 - Ripto's Rage! still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 1999 on PS1, Insomniac Games' project refines the original's formula with worlds more structured around side quests, minigames and more developed characters. The handling stays accessible and the readability of collectibles clean. The warm pastel art direction grows more varied and the bosses gain a real staging. The camera and some jumps still demand attention, and the PS1 version loses finesse against the remasters. Recommended today for families, for 3D platformer fans and for Insomniac Games nostalgics curious about the lineage's peak on Sony's first home console hardware before its later reinventions.
