A Mindscape Steel Talons helicopter sim in the Atari arcade line. Technically dated, lovely for arcade flight fans.

Collector interest

Mega Drive adaptation of Tengen's combat-helicopter simulator Steel Talons, released in Japan and Korea. Its collector interest lies in the marked rarity of the Korean version from a very small Mega Drive base, and in the somewhat apart status of a Tengen game, a publisher whose releases on the machine interest seasoned collectors. The Korea variant, far harder to find than the Japanese one, is its coveted piece.

Is Steel Talons still worth playing in 2026?

A Mega Drive port of Atari's simulator, Steel Talons has you pilot a combat helicopter in wireframe 3D to destroy enemy formations across missions. The 3D ambition, rare and bold on the machine, gives real singularity, but the choppy polygonal rendering and heavy handling make the experience arid. The concept fascinates more than it delights today. A technical curiosity for fans of retro flight simulation and the curious about the Mega Drive's 3D feats.
