Street Fighter Alpha 3 on GBA, port of Capcom's versus fighter. Impressive roster, V/A/X mode system well preserved. Technically an achievement on GBA, some forgivable slowdowns.

Story
"Anecdotal"
Nervy and motley, the musical selection gives each fighter his own theme, between razor-edged techno and edgy rock. It matches the frantic tempo of the bouts and underlines the personality of a whole roster. This melodic generosity, faithful to the Alpha spirit, still galvanises the most hard-fought duels.

European PAL edition of Street Fighter Alpha 3, a GBA port distributed by Capcom Europe with the Alpha name following the Western convention, distinct from the Japanese Zero 3 Upper version. The title adapts to portable format the densest arcade content in the Alpha series while adding its own Survival mode. Capcom Europe run was short, the European cardboard box is fragile, and a PAL identified complete copy with intact manual has become a notable piece for Capcom Fighters completists.

Better with friends

A port of a legendary 2D fighter that regains all its snap with two, over a cable link, in duels with a rich system and a generous roster. The competition rests on positioning, anti-airs and reading intentions, rewarding patience as much as reflexes. The duel needs two consoles and the cable, but once hooked up, the urge to clash and get even never wanes.

Is Street Fighter Alpha 3 still worth playing in 2026?

Street Fighter Alpha 3, also released as Zero 3 Upper in Japan, is a true technical feat on the GBA in how the port preserves the sprite readability and the ISM Original Variable X Ism system of the original game. The roster is massive, the World Tour mode offers a personalized progression and the controls remain honest despite the obvious shortage of buttons. A few slowdowns persist but do not spoil the whole. A very recommendable cartridge for fans of classic 2D versus fighting.
