Story
"Solid"
The first entry to do entirely without licensed series, this one must establish credible iconography from scratch: machine silhouettes conceived in families, colour codes tying each unit to a faction, insignia and numbers painted on the armour. That internal coherence effectively replaces the instant recognition the borrowed universes provided.

Working through every scenario, recruiting pilots and leveling them up, fine-tuning each mecha loadout: the tactical campaign sprawls across dozens of grid maps where every clash demands patience and planning. Managing morale, optimizing units and chasing the strongest robots make players replay for a flawless run. A reputation as a dense strategy RPG that Banpresto fans still uphold today.

An underrated gem

A rare Western outing for the saga, this tactical pits original mechs against each other in spectacular, talkative turn-based battles. A niche genre and an obscure license outside Japan condemned it to obscurity. For fans of mech strategy and polished animations, it's an overlooked gateway into a teeming universe.

Is Super Robot Taisen - Original Generation still worth playing in 2026?

Super Robot Taisen - Original Generation is a Banpresto tactical RPG built solely around original mechs, freed from the series' usual anime licenses. The depth of the grid-based turn combat, the unit customization and the staging of spectacular attacks make it a rich and rewarding tactical game. This rare Western release allowed players to discover the studio's know-how in the field. For fans of strategic RPGs and giant robots, it is an ideal gateway into the saga.
