Symphonia keeps its angular cel-shading and its bygone hues, while Tales of Graces f unfolds a brighter, smoother image, with vivid colours and designs by Mutsumi Inomata. The art direction reads by contrast, the passage from one game to the next measuring the distance the series has travelled.
Between fire and lyricism, Motoi Sakuraba's compositions string together nervy battle themes and moving melodies across the adventure. The music hugs the story's high points, galvanising the real-time clashes. This generous score, in the grand tradition of the JRPG, stays close to fans' hearts.
Setting off to escort the Chosen meant to save the world, a young man discovers that his quest rests on a cruel lie binding two worlds. The tale tackles discrimination, sacrifice and friendship with unexpected scope and gravity. Carried by endearing characters, it remains one of the most beloved Tales.
