The Tokyo depicted is that of the entertainment districts, advertising screens, record shops, recording studios, reproduced precisely enough to be recognised, then doubled by a parallel world saturated with neon and stage motifs. The battle outfits borrow from performance costume rather than armour, each character wearing a uniform conceived as a performer's.
Sparkling and colourful, the music blends idol J-pop, pop-rock and supercharged battle themes at the heart of Tokyo show business. Each confrontation turns into a flamboyant concert, carried by catchy songs. This sonic identity, joyful and stylish, makes the whole singularity of this Atlus and Nintendo crossover.
The story follows teenagers who have joined a talent agency, with auditions, shoots and first concerts, and grafts onto that coming-of-age thread a supernatural threat that steals performers' creative energy. The pairing is more coherent than it looks: both threads deal with what one gives of oneself to an audience, and the resolution makes them converge.
