Story

Still signed by Barry Leitch, the sequel enriches its supercharged synth-rock with new, even catchier and more energetic themes. Each circuit pulses with a galvanising groove that charges the sense of speed. This sonic generosity, faithful to the series' spirit, confirms the composer's talent for the racing game.

Collector interest

Top Racer 2 is the original Super Famicom name of what the West knew as Top Gear 2. For the collector this Japanese version offers the authentic starting point of Kemco's split-screen racing, with its SFC cardboard box and spine card. A popular title at launch, it remains a generally affordable import source, easy to assemble complete, prized mainly for its first-draft status and the period presentation specific to the Japanese market.

Is Top Racer 2 still worth playing in 2026?

A sequel to Gremlin and Kemco's racer, Top Gear 2 enriches the formula with car damage, an upgrade buying system between races, weather and an expanded world championship. The sense of speed remains and the added depth pleasantly extends the lifespan, still best in split screen for two. The production stays close to the first entry. An excellent arcade racer for fans of snappy 16 bit driving and of progression between events.
