"Anecdotal"
Sparkling and zany, ADK's music chains rousing pop melodies and cute themes that match the frenzy of this atypical versus shooter. Each clash tips into a joyful sonic cacophony, perfectly in tune with the on-screen chaos. This musical freshness, funny and irresistible, gives the game all its charm.
Gameplay
"Masterful"
Destroying your foes to bombard the opponent on the other screen turns this shooter into a frantic duel unlike any other. Anticipating waves, triggering cascading counter-attacks and managing two fronts at once takes steady nerves. An unlikely marriage of shmup and versus, the concept stays surprisingly fresh and intense today.
Fun
"From the very first seconds"
Marrying the shoot'em up with competitive puzzling was bold, and the result is brilliant: lining up enemies to set off chains that bombard your opponent turns the vertical shooter into a supercharged duel. The split-screen versus, frantic and colourful, hooks instantly. Original, snappy and fiercely addictive, one of the cleverest concepts in the genre.
Complete: box, manual and disc/cart very clean. Lightly handled.

ADK Japanese June 1996 edition of the Neo Geo CD port of Twinkle Star Sprites, a cult competitive vertical shooter combining magical-girl aesthetics and split-screen duels. The Japanese CD cartridge offers an extended orchestral CD-Audio soundtrack and keeps the original Japanese voices of the sprites. Never released on Western AES cartridge, this Japanese CD is the only legitimate way to play the title in its full version, which makes it one of the most contested ADK CD targets worldwide.
An underrated gem
Turning downed enemies into projectiles flung back at your opponent: this versus shooter rests on a brilliant mechanic that makes it one of the machine's best two-player games. Too singular for the mainstream, it stayed confidential for years. A competitive jewel that fans of frantic duels absolutely must try.
Better with friends
An original versus shooter where two players face off, each sweeping their side of the screen to ship enemy waves and bosses over to their rival. The competition rests on that delightful indirect duel: the better you chain, the more you swamp your opponent. Cute, lively and unpredictable, it spawns joyful reversals and happily restarts for short, snappy rounds full of trash talk.
Is Twinkle Star Sprites still worth playing in 2026?
Twinkle Star Sprites is a wild versus puzzler from ADK, with bouncing stars, adorable characters and a counter-attack system of unusual subtlety beneath its kawaii glaze. In two-player it grips instantly and the competitive depth surprises. On Neo Geo CD, the CD soundtrack adds genuine sparkle to the pastel look. Loading stays contained. For competitive puzzle and original retro versus fans, still a too-overlooked gem today to discover absolutely, ideally with friends on original hardware.
