Post-apocalyptic vehicle combat from Luxoflux. Nine vehicles, destructible arenas and very festive arcade action. The shooting feels snappy, the vehicle variety does its job and the multiplayer is jubilant. One of the best vehicular combat games on the N64.

Activision and Luxoflux North American October 1998 pressing of Vigilante 8, a vehicular combat game inspired by Sony's Twisted Metal ported to N64. The US cartridge keeps the original English voices and the licensed 1970s soundtrack without later replacements. More accessible than the regional PAL pressings on the secondary market, it is the reference version for Luxoflux and Activision enthusiasts documenting the late-1990s cross-platform car-combat competition.

Is Vigilante 8 still worth playing in 2026?

Luxoflux's post-apocalyptic vehicular combat title, Vigilante 8 offers nine vehicles, destructible arenas and very festive arcade action. The gunplay is brisk, the vehicle variety works and the multiplayer mode delights. The per-vehicle narrated mission structure gives every run real character. Without Twisted Metal 2's finesse, the game leans hard into uncomplicated mayhem. For fans of retro vehicular combat and evenings with friends, it still makes an excellent pick today and a fine couch-side companion on original hardware.
