Wing Commander adapts the Origin Systems space opera to Mega CD with its space combat and scripted story between pilots. The version intensively uses the CD format for pre rendered cinematics, orchestral soundtrack and actor voices. Excellent for 16 bit space sim fans, CD classic.

Collector interest

Wing Commander, an Electronic Arts space-combat simulation ported to Mega-CD, with a branching narrative campaign and cutscenes using the CD. Its collector interest lies in the rarity of this major PC licence on the format and the demand from space-sim fans, the Japanese run being especially hard to find. The original Japanese edition is the case purists favour.

Is Wing Commander still worth playing in 2026?

A Mega-CD port of Origin's space combat simulator, Wing Commander plunges the player into a narrative campaign where each fighter mission aboard the carrier influences the conflict's course. The immersion, the staging between flights and the sense of stakes stay striking for the era, supported by the CD format's contribution. The pad handling and the port's tech have aged. An estimable curiosity for fans of retro space simulation and enthusiasts of the space-combat golden age.
