XCOM - Enemy Unknown review
Positioning your squad tile after tile, knowing one mistake can cost a cherished soldier, sets up a tactical tension where each successful mission calls for the next. Developing your base and improving your troops reward the strategy. Its randomness and its difficulty sometimes frustrate, but the attachment to your recruits and the "just one more mission" make every game hard to wrap up.
Steering a whole organization against the invasion imposes tight management of base, research and squads that permadeath makes precious. Each tactical mission is gladly replayed at higher difficulty, and losing a cherished soldier reignites the urge to do better, which explains the stubborn reputation of this demanding, nerve-wracking genre classic.
